An Email

Hey Bloggers, or whoever could be reading this blog, as so I received this following announcement from a friend in my inbox the other day and I thought to post it on this blog because hey, it’s less writing sometimes in my attempt to maintain content on this blog whenever possible. And this event art rocks.:

1) Thank you all so much for making November’s first ever Hell’s Kitchen Artists in Studio Tours such an amazing success.

2) I’m happy to announce that our NEXT Hell’s Kitchen Open Studios will be May 21-23. And I’d love for you all to be involved.

HK: ArtiST was enormous, wonderful, and FREE. 50+ locales, largely homes & studios, art sponsored by and in many local businesses, media attention, some sales. Follow our art and exposure: Artists in the Kitchen. So many more performed: Theater, dance, music, song, comedy, video, murals…All who joined us to celebrate at the opening & closing parties. Plus so many helped beyond sharing your Great Muses and art: meetings, volunteers, encouragement-coloring the Festival with your unique spirit, much altruism, cooperation and joy. I am very grateful for all of it. It was the best (1st Midtown West) self guided art tour we could ever want.

Our next Open Studio will be May 21-23. And annually now: each May. I would like all artists from our 1st event back again! Plus so many I have met or were referred: join us! Thursday 2-25 at 6:30 PM is an open meeting at the Renaissance Diner, 776 9th Avenue, just south of 52nd St. I would love to see all, but know many will not be able to attend. So here is an indication of what we plan, & you will all get regular updates. And what I need from all participants, which will not take great effort, but will help us get so much more attention & success in promoting our art, fortunes, and neighborhood as a gem like art destination:

If you want to show work or perform: Please hit “reply” to this E-mail. Tell me what you would like to do with us: what type of art or performance. If outside Midtown West, tell me, I will find a local venue to show your talents. include a link to your Web Site or some web presence or art photos, if you are new to us, or have new info this time around!

Everyone, artists, and all who just LOVE art and want a fun, easy way to nurture this surprisingly original and skilled art scene in the midst of the greatest ‘art city’ in the world:
please do 2 ‘lil things for us:

1) Just promote us in general. Put our info & Web site (artistsinthekitchen.org) on all your social media/Facebook like sites. Send out this info, you can cut ‘n paste the above, to all your contacts. Tell all to check out our many superb artists on the Web Site, see much of the press and listings we had last time: & if any are in media or have such contacts: get a story done on us! Refer any & all artists & volunteers to me, & re: E-mail lists: please send me every E- address you can for my list/publicity. Artists groups you know: please refer them here, we will cross promote with them to get more visitors and possible patrons/clients.

2) I ask everyone to press reply to just pick one thing to tell me you would like to help with. As much or little as you like. Some can be done just sitting at home, other stuff are simple occasional walks around your area. The main categories to choose from: fliering. Web Site or tech help. Recruiting Press. Getting new sponsors. Outreach to block associations. Contacting hotels/concierges/tour buses to promote us. Printing. Help organizing our parties! Craigslist and other online ads. Getting new venues. Raffle. And even celebrity recruitment: good at getting contact/your/my foot in the door? I have a few BIG names and artists who live here…

Lastly, I had to finalize plans with my core group, inc. superb consultants. So soon I will tell you of idea(l)s like: when we may may get separate non-Profit status, like with a Board, (now we have non-profit status under fiscal sponsorship of Fractured Atlas) and give possibilities of how we may expand, get grants or public funds, etc. Now some want my notes to not be a book,Smiley_face and some are wary of attachments. So if you want to receive the projected vs. actual budget and time line for last year or this one, just ask! For our 1st event, I was about $1,700 in the red. This year I would like to break even. When we start making $, it will all go back in the event: I will never take any profit from it.

Thank you all so much again. I look forward to your great help with this amazing community of artists.

Namaste,
Mike

A Bullet Space Art Show

Hey Bloggers, or whoever could be reading this blog, and Bullet Space has an art show going on. I know because that copy of “The Bulletin, The Perfect Crime, curated by Carlo McCormick” and last weeks edition of The Villager Newspaper says so. And from what I remember, Bullet Space is one of those last of the remaining Squats in the neighborhood of the Lower East Side, now called the East Village for real estate marketing purposes maybe, in that city of New York, where if you need a home, take one, that could now be called homesteads that have either been bought out or sold out in the age of gentrification that have survived from that era of Tompkins Square Park and its riots to stop gentrification and free everyone from long lore ago. And Bullet Space has held many an artistic events over the years. And that flyer for their event reads as follows: 292 East 3rd St. New York, New York 10009 (Btwn. Ave C & D), The Perfect Crime, Andrew Castrucci & The Bullet Space Archive, 1983-2008, 25 years, curated by Carlo McCormick. An Urban Artists Collaboration, Nov. 21st-Dec. 20th, 2009. Opening Nov 21st, 7-9pm. Hours: Fri. 3-7pm, Sat., Sun. 1-6pm. Or by appt., or chance. And some of those artists participating in that installation were Miguel Algarin, Steve Cannon, Brendan Carney, Andrew Castrucci, Paul Castrucci, Nadia Coen, Marguerite Van Cook, Thom Corn, Yolanda Crespo, Anton Van Dalen, John Farris, Chris Flash, Chico Garcia, Missing Foundation, Marlis Momber, Frank Morales, Cookie Mueller, Robert Parker, Aaron Perez, Pedro Pietri, Miguel Pinero, Rolando Politi, Lee Quinones, John Ranard, James Romberger, David Yanez and more.
And this art event squatter rocks. Free The world, Housing is a Human Right, Squat The Land, Squat or Rot. Have a great squatter art day.

3rd Ward

Hey Bloggers, and 3rd ward is having a party. I know because this weeks Nonsense NYC list says so. And in case you haven’t heard, Nonsense NYC is that cool list of all these happening events throughout that city of New York on the seemingly underground and aboveground maybe, cultural art, music and entertainment scene. And so they list as one of their many weekly events that 3rd ward is having this what seems like the be all to end all with just about everyone that one can think of on the arts and cultural entertainment scene and beyond to make this party. And that event is described as follows.

XXXXX SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10 XXXXX

Nonsense NYC presents:

10

A one-night physical manifestation of the Nonsense NYC email list, celebrating 10 years of weird art and culture coverage in New York City. Featuring artwork by 75 artists and collectives, an all-night dance party, and performances every five minutes. With eight installation theater spaces and a spectacular spectacle on a brand new floor at one of the best venues in Brooklyn.

From 7-9p, artists, collectives, and makers look into the future with a salon-style gallery show on the main floor. The enemy of anyone celebrating 10 years in New York is nostalgia. To fight it, we decided to ask what people want to see in the *next* 10 years. The response is overwhelming: 75 visions of what culture could be like in the next decade. From Rubulad’s line-up to swim races in the Gowanus Canal, from the Danger’s antics to the Bruce High Quality Foundation’s gender benders, you’ll see it here first.

Then, from 9p-1a, we turn the brand-new second floor space into eight different theatrical venues for a series of intimate performances starting every five minutes. You will not be able to attend everything; No one will. But a very limited number of people will witness very special events performed just for them. Featuring Lauren Darling’s Hungry for More, a Lady Circus Clothing Swap, and Sxip’s Quarter Hour of Charm among other delights. Be there to get tickets early.

At 1a we celebrate 10 years with a special commemorative performance and open up the entire space for dancing amid the performance detritus. Featuring DJs Joro Boro, Dirty Finger, Jaiko, Small Change, and Justin Carter until very, very late. More music by Raya Brass Band and King Expressers.

This is a special night. Dress like it.

A partial list of artists and performers: Hungry March Band, Flux Factory, Tom Beale, Winkel and Baltick, House of Yes, Mark Read and Gregg Osofsky, Hi Christina, Gemini and Scorpio, ABC No Rio, Cinders, Joe Tuba, Galapagos Art Space, Madagascar Institute, Union Docs, the Change You Want to See Gallery, Glowlab, Jason Sinopoli, Tom Swirly, Shel Kimen, Mia Ihara, We’ll Never Have Paris, Black Label Bike Club, In Our Hearts, VAST, Newmindspace, Paula Segal-Dylan Gauthier, Shanimal, Kayrock Screenprinting, Newsonic, Improv Everywhere, Secret Project Robot, the Poetry Brothel, Michele Carlo, Reverend Billy, Matt Levy, Ayen Tran, Paige’s House of Collection, Dorkbot, Rude Mechanical Orchestra, Anney Fresh, Keith Ozar, Nerd Nite, Dark Passage, Nick Jones, Glasslands, Small Print Fare, Paul Lukas, Figment, Touching You, the Reverend Burke Hefner, Dizzy Izzy and the Rockets of Desire, Zemi 17, Marygoround, Bushwick Book Club, Nicole Whelan, Jean Loscalzo, Graspy McTakeItAll, Zero Boy

An Art Show

And so in my attempt to blah blog and find content for this blog whenever possible, I came across this email in my internet travels throughout internetland today that says someone is having an art show. And I know someone is having an art show because that email I received today says so. And I plan to dust off a few pieces of artwork and take them out of the closet to put in this art show as well. So instead of blaghing my thoughts about this show, I thought I would just repost that we’re having an art show announcement that was sent today as follows:

After the Gold Rush: Recession Art Sale

NEW YORK August 13, 2009 – From September 17 through October 10, 2009, one hundred out-of-work professionals will try their hand at selling art at After the Gold Rush: Recession Art Sale, in a 50,000 square foot gallery at 679 3rd Ave. at the corner of 43rd Street. A series of events in the glass-walled space fosters a return to the days when art played an integral part in the life of the community.

The objective is to create income, comment on current shifts in the market economy, and create a sense of community involving the artists and sellers. Unemployed individuals from all walks of life will be engaged as sellers to market the works on exhibit. They will be trained as art consultants, taking a 30% commission on each transaction.

After the Gold Rush seeks a diverse group of sellers reflecting the wide economic spectrum of the unemployed. Sellers are being solicited through advertisements in newspapers, online listings and other job opportunity sites and currently include an out-of-work IT worker, a teacher, and a marketing maven. Positions are still available.

Hosting the event is Anita Durst’s Chashama, which has worked successfully with conceptual artist Elanit Kayne on experiments in value and commissioned her to do this new project on the economy. In 2002, Kayne’s Times Square installation, All I Want for Christmas is Nothing: an Experiment in Value, considered sellers’ and buyers’ notions of the relative worth of objects.

Kayne and curator of arts and events Mia Feroleto, creator of ARTWALK NY, and Frank Shifreen, the founder of the Gowanus Art Canal Project, will create a gallery for thirty top-selling international artists. Shifreen, the New York partner of cultureinside, an award-winning exhibition site, currently available in French, German and English, is hosting the online gallery for the project.

Artists will include: Noah Baen, Matthew Beall, Gene de Bartolo, Michele Brody, Peter Cicariello, Thom Corn, Carla Cubit, Shanee Epstein, Ekterina Existart, Mark Grimm & Amy Cheatle, Karen Gunderson, Janusz Jaworski, Elanit Kayne, KK Kozik, Lorenzo Pace, Gila Paris, Susu Pianchupattana, Yulia Pinkusevich, Thaddeus Radell, Mike and Sherry Rader, Robin Ross, Rafael Rodriguez, Barnaby Ruhe, Charles Seplowin, Frank Shifreen, Lucy Slivinski, Tiffany Sum and Lane Twitchell. Have a great art day.

Powerhouse Books

And it is Sunday on this day, that day of rest. Or is that Saturday, the Sabbath. And yet I find myself blaghing away. And I remember blah blogging about PowerHouse Books sometime a while ago on this blog. And it was for that book that was all the rage titled “Tompkins Square”, a black and white photography book by Q. Sakamaki and essay by Bill Weinberg that appeared in memoriam of the 20th Anniversary of the Tompkins Square Park Riots in that Park, that park everywhere in that former New York City neighborhood of the Lower East Side, that is now called the East Village for real estate marketing purposes maybe. And that book rocked. And this time Powerhouse Books, or is it Powerhouse Arena is having an art exhibit called “2,191 Days and Counting” curated by Maya Joseph-Goteiner and Chere Krakovsky to benefit Iraq Veterans Against the War. And there are a hundred artists in that show. I know because the flyer that they have on their website says so. And there will be art and performances as part of the community’s response to the continuing Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. And videos will be a part of this exhibition also. And some of those artists and performers include Danya Abt, Grace Ann Alfiero, Waleed Ashad, Carol Ashley, Perry Bard, Nina Berman, Wafaa Bilal, Jean Christian Bourcart, Sherrard Bostwick, Orna Bradshaw, Pam Butler, Doris Caçoilo, Drew Cameron, Damian Catera, Sarawut Chutiwongpeti, Susanna Coffey, Michael Courvoisier, Carla Cubit, Larry Cyr, Peter Delman, Alyssa Dreyfus, Elise Engler, Danielle Fotopoulos, Marilyn Freeman, Joy Garnett, Ariel Goldberg, Sam Gould, Aaron Glantz, Lori Grinker, Fariba Hajamadi, Tara Hughes-Hall, Rene Farkass, Basem Hassan, Diane Hodack, Aaron Hughes, Lanna Joffrey, Andrew Ellis Johnson, David Joseph-Goteiner, Wonder Koch, Joyce Kozloff, Dorothy Krakovsky, Jason Laning, Tyler Lee Zabe, Ju-Pong Lin, Ardele Lister, Melissa Macalpin, Kyla Mathis-Angress, Suzanne McClelland, Steve McCurry, Dato Mio, James Nachtwey, Nobuho Nagasawa, Aron Namenwirth, Farah Nosh, David Opdyke, Alexander Optivion, Zach Osif, Franc Palaia, Paul Park, Caroline Parker, John Paul, Kenneth Pietrobono, Grace Graupe-Pillard, Lucian Read, Paul Root, Martha Rosler, Erika Rothenberg, Safa Samiezade-Yazd, Susan Silas, Elin O’Hara Slavick, Susanne Slavick, Qais Al-Sindy, Joan Snyder, Molly Snyder-Fink Chrysanne Stathacos, Jon Turner, Betsy Van Die, Christopher Vongsawat, Nathaniel Ward, AJ Wilhelm, Sarah Nelson Wright, Agnes Wszolkowski, Suyeon Yun, Tyler Zabel, The Artists Against The War, The Combat Paper Project and more. And this event rocks. And what, if anything does this have to do with a No Police State? Have a great art day.

An Outsider Art Fair

And that Outsider Art Fair must have happened last week or so. I know because this copy of the Village Voice that has been sitting around for some time says so. And that Outsider Art Fair seems to happen every year around this time in that month of January in that city of New York at that Puck Building on Houston Street. And what’s outsider art anyway? Art that’s on the outside. And the outside of what? And it seems to have something to do with those phrases like self taught, art brut, art of the insane, mental health, visionary and folk art. Art from the margins of society, people who are out there art, maybe.. And it seems as if outsider art in, the newest trend, maybe. And I know this Outsider Art Fair must happen ever year because I think I can remember blah blogging about it on this blog last year. And I think this Outsider Art Fair is part of that Outsider Art scene with galleries like Galarie Etienne, Ames Gallery, Henry Boxer Gallery, Phyllis Kind Gallery, Ricco Maresca, Carl Hammer, Maxwell Projects, Marion Harris, American Primitive Gallery, Gilley’s Gallery, Andrew Edlin Gallery, Luise Ross Gallery, Cavin Morris Gallery and artists like Gramdma Moses, Howard Finster, Terry Turrell, Bill Traylor, Adolf Wolfli, Frank Calloway, Henry Darger and more. And that art fair rocks. Have a great art day.

A Brooklyn Gallery Hop

Hey Bloggers, and even though it is still Sunday, (Just yesterday, that is…), that day of rest on this day, am still finding myself blah blogging away. And this time it’s about art, art, and more art. And I now it’s about art, art and more art because this flyer I have sitting here in front of me says so, and also because hey, it’s less writing sometimes. And this event happens to be called Smart Brooklyn Gallery Hop. And this is one of those colorful glossy postcards in the artful colors of blue, and is that a lime green, white and orange. And it’s Brooklyn art time again as this flyer says, Sunday, December 14, 2008, 1pm-6pm, free, fun and easy. First Thursday

And being that I find myself on that topics of events again as in the previous post, here is another one of those events in New York City posts again. And somehow I found myself coming across one of those art event advertisement announcement flyers the other day,as I guess these type of flyers abound just about everywhere in this that town. And this flyer was for 1st Thursday, Dumbo Gallery Walk, 5:30-8:30 every first Thursday of the month. And this event seems like one of those Dumbo neighborhood in Brooklyn kind of events. And there are monthly special features such as artist talks, book signings, printmaking demonstrations and live music. And some of the participating galleries are Aswoon Gallery, Gallery QB, Melville House, VII Dumbo, Pochron Studios, Powerhouse Arena, Smack Mellon, Dumbo Arts Center, Rabbithole Studio, 5 plus 5, Brooklyn Arts Council, Byrd Hoffman Watermill Fdn., Farmani Gallery, Gloria Kennedy Gallery, Henry Gregg Gallery, Klompching Gallery, Nelson Hancock Gallery, Robert Wilson/RW Work, Safe T Gallery, Tivoli, Umbrage Gallery, Wessel plus O’Connor Fine Art, Spring and more. An Art Opening

And today is that Sunday day time of the week again, that day of the sun, sabbath day of rest, or is that Saturday? And yet I find myself blah blogging away on this blog for some reason. And so someone actually did send me a few photos of that art event I found myself blogging about just yesterday on this blog. And that person was a guy named Ves who sent me those photos from above, as this art event was one of those times that I did not find myself dragging that camera out of the closet, whose only purpose seems to be to collect dust these days. And those photos above are from Leo’s Art Opening the other night in Dumbo, that neighborhood in Brooklyn in that City of New York where every other person seems as if they are an artist of some sort. And those photos above are of these two people dressed up in their art installation which seemed to be themselves, sitting on I guess Leo’s bed. And they were a colorful art installation indeed. And that art event was from the Leo Kuelbs Collection, titled “Space Within Space”, New Sculpture and Installations at “dumbo art under the bridge festival”, Opening Party with work by ON megumi Akiyoshi, OLEK, Thomas Lendvai, Christy Singleton, Adriana Varella, Nilton Maltz, Andrew Eustler and Chris Herbeck. And his art events rock and are usually a great excuse for me to go see cool artwork. Have a great art day.
